HONIARA, Solomon Islands (August 7, 2013) – U.S. Sailors and Marines participating in Pacific Partnership 2013 gather at the Guadalcanal American Memorial for a ceremony commemorating the 71st anniversary of the landing of U.S. Marines on Guadalcanal during World War II. Working at the invitation of each host nation, U.S. Navy forces are joined by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and regional partners that include Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and New Zealand to improve maritime security, conduct humanitarian assistance and strengthen disaster-response preparedness.
